Why Losing Your Only Key Feels Worse Than It Actually Is
Most people assume that without the original key, the car is basically in write-off territory, or that they’re looking at a bill running into four figures from the dealership. The truth is it’s not as bad as you think.
Modern cars store all the information needed to programme a new key inside the vehicle itself. As an auto locksmith company, our job is to access that information, cut a key to match your specific vehicle, and programme it so the car’s immobiliser recognises it. No original key required. The First Things To Do
Before anything else, a few practical steps:
Stop searching in a panic and think it through logically.
Where were you last with the key in hand? Coats, bags, and the bottom of a washing basket account for a surprising number of “lost” keys that turn up within an hour or so.
Have your V5C logbook or some proof you own the vehicle ready.

What An Auto Locksmith Actually Does
This is where people are often surprised. There’s no smashing windows, no drilling door locks and no damaging car doors.
Here’s the process on most modern vehicles:
Unlocking the vehicle
If the vehicle is locked, we gain entry using non destructive methods. The lock is picked open with no damage at all.
Vehicle identification
We confirm the exact make, model, and year, and pull the specific key information linked to that VIN. Different manufacturers use different systems, so we have multiple pieces of programming and diagnostic equipment which allows us to work on any make or model.
Cutting a new key
Using specialist key cutting equipment, a blank key is cut to match pattern of the door, boot and ignition barrels.
Programming the key to the vehicle
We connect diagnostic equipment to communicate with the car’s onboard computer and register the new key so the immobiliser accepts it. Without this step, the key will turn in the lock, but the engine won’t start.
Removal of any old keys
If necessary, we delete the old keys from the vehicles systems. This means if you key is found by somebody else it will not unlock or start the vehicle.
Testing everything on site
Central locking, remote functions, engine start, all checked before we leave to ensure everything is perfect.
Depending on the vehicle, this whole process typically takes somewhere between thirty minutes and an hour.
Does It Matter If It’s An Older Or Newer Car?
We can produce new car keys for both older and newer vehicles. It’s just the methods we use that are different.
For much older vehicles such as classics its usually just a case of reading the depths of the wafers in the lock and cutting a new key to match, no programming required.
Newer vehicles with proximity keys, push-button start, and more advanced immobiliser systems need much more specialist equipment and take a bit longer, but they’re absolutely still doable.
The idea that you’re totally stuck once a modern key is lost simply isn’t accurate at all. It just means the job needs the right kit and experience.
How To Stop This Happening Again
Once you’re back in the car and we’ve created you a brand new working key it’s worth getting us to cut and programme a spare at the same time. Once we have a working car key its much cheaper for us to then copy you a second spare key.
A spare key kept somewhere sensible, with a trusted neighbour at home or with a family member nearby means next time this happens it’s a much easier fix, rather than an emergency call-out. It’s a small cost now against a much bigger cost and inconvenience later.
