Will your House be Burgled?

Will your House be Burgled?

Getting burgled is a common fear for many in the UK, not just for the theft of your property but the possibility of you or your family being hurt in the process. While burglaries in the UK aren’t as common or as violent as our friends have to deal with over the pond, they’re still terrifying and distressing incidents.

Some think their house would never be attacked by burglars: their valuables aren’t worth much or too heavy to carry off, their door and window locks are secure and (usually) locked, their neighbours are always home and can see a burglary in progress, or they’ll simply rough up any wannabee burglars should they encounter them in their house. But the average burglar isn’t as comically inept or unprepared as their onscreen counterparts: they know that taking risks when raiding a house like smashing a window or door open will attract attention, nor is night-time the usual time for burglary.

It’s far more common for burglars to watch their target for weeks, even months before attempting anything. In particular, they look for a work/school routine or vacation time, when the house is unoccupied. This could mean a burglary in broad daylight, disturbingly common nowadays. They’ll also be looking for windows and doors you habitually leave unlocked, as coming in quietly is much stealthier than smashing your way in. Old locks are also a target, as some of them can be lockpicked with ease.

When the opportunity comes, don’t expect the burglary to last more than 10 minutes, or for anyone to notice: if they’re any good at their trade they’ll have checked all the usual hiding places for valuables like jewellery quickly and quietly. At daytime, entering through the front door is preferred for obvious reasons: it doesn’t look like breaking in.

The common burglar has to be good at his job to stay in it, and too often homeowners underestimate their skills while overestimating their home security. Besides replacing your old locks, purchasing a security systems (or a decoy) is recommended as burglars avoid houses with an obvious burglar detector in view.
