How secure will your home be in the future?

How secure will your home be in the future?

Aa time goes on, we’re developing technology that makes our lives easier, less complicated and more intuitive than before. The traditional key and lock that we’re all familiar with has been standardised and iterated on for hundreds of years, but with the ubiquity of wireless technology and the Internet, we’ve started developing keys that can do more than simply open locks: it’s entirely possible that everything in our homes can be interacted with remotely from our smartphones or a locking device.

From the comfort of your bed, you could lock the doors, close the curtains and turn the heater on after a hard day’s work without having to get up. While this certainly sounds convenient, it opens up problems that we haven’t had to worry about before: How secure are our homes from hackers?

The archetypical hacker likes to spend his time messing with websites for amusement or protest, but hacking is becoming a valuable commodity in the criminal underworld, due to the lucrative identity theft business. Hackers are even being wielded as weapons of war by rogue states such as North Korea for intelligence gathering or espionage. It’s only a matter of time before your average burglar has access to hacking tools that render any electronic countermeasures against them worthless.

We’ve already seen how easy it is for hackers to break into keyless cars and drive away without even using the key, and security for Smart Keys is considerably more standardised and developed than the prototypical Internet of Things device that are being developed now. Currently, IoT security isn’t standardised or even effective, as the technology necessary is still in development, but judging by other keyless systems developed in the meantime, our future may be very insecure without some kind of security standardisation and improvement.
